The music launch of 'Jodi Love Dile Na Praane'

W

ith love in the air, the music release ofSudeshna Roy - Abhijit Guha's newest directorial venture "Jodi Love Dile Na Praane" became that much more special.

The star-studded event was graced by the likes ofRaj Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee; besides the cast and crew of the film.

The music of the film has been composed by Raja Narayan Deb while Srijato has penned the lyrics for songs like Paltabe Shomoy, Ek Chokh Sopno; sung by the likes of Dibyendu Mukherjee, Ishita Chakrabarty and Rupankar. Lending his voice for a Bengali track - Nokshi Katha is the singer ofBadtameez Dil fame - Benny Dayal. 

The film stars Abir Chatterjee, Ananya Chatterjee, Arjun Chakrabarty, Tridha Choudhury, Kaushik Ganguly and Kaushik Sen amongst others. The Director duo urged everyone to listen to the original tracks and help prevent piracy.

Sudeshna Roy added "We have also used a track from the Atulprasad Sen collections, named Ke Abaar Bajay Banshi. We hope people like this version which has been sung by Soumya Pal."

Prosenjit, Dev, Soham and others practice for the upcoming Cricket League

W

inter mornings have always meant a lot of activities at the Maidan of Kolkata and as usual, Cricket has always been the sport eight out of ten groups have opted for at the lush green outfields!

Recently, the Tollywood Stars took to the field practising for their upcoming Cricket tournament - the CCL.

Our Little Birdie spotted Dev in a rather serious-about-the-game mode as he took to the nets with an ethusiastic grin! Dev batted quite a while practising the hook and pull shots, more than the others! We reckon he's looking to knock the ball out of the park just the way he knocked every record down with his last release - Chander Pahar!

Little Birdie also spotted Prosenjit, Soham and Gaurav Chakrabarty at the practice session alongside the Captain of the Bengal Ranji Team - Laxmi Ratan Shukla! LR, as he is fondly known, came to support his friend Soham and give some tips to the Tolly stars on facing the bowlers on seaming wickets!

We wish the 'Bengal Tigers' all the very best!

Bengali Screen Legend - Suchitra Sen passes away

B

engali Screen Legend - Smt. Suchitra Senpassed away of a 'massive heart attack' around 8.25am, earlier today in Kolkata.

Mrs. Sen had been hospitalised on December 23 last year (2013) on complaints of severe cold attack and a possible lung infection. A full team of expert Doctors were treating her at the Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata and she had been fighting an uphill battle for the last 26 odd days.

An Icon of the Silver Screen and the 'Apple of Eye' for many Bengali film lovers, Mrs. Sen had quit films in 1976 and led a hermit like life. Best known for films like 'Deep Jele Jaai', 'Saat Paake Bandha', 'Uttar Falguni', 'Saptapadi' etc. as well as Hindi movies 'Devdas', 'Bombai Ka Babu', and 'Aandhi', she has been often dubbed as the Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema.

It is indeed a sad time for the entire family, as well as millions of fans of Mrs. Sen. Kolkata is mourning this immense loss and so are we.

Rest in peace - Mahanayika.

Kolkata revisits 'Sholay' with Ramesh Sippy

I

t has been 40 years since the "Biggest Blockbuster" of Indian Cinema has released.

Yes, we are talking about the cult film - 'Sholay' - where the characters like Jai, Veeru, Gabbar andThakur have been an important part of popular culture of the country; clearly, Ramesh Sippy couldn't have debuted with a better film! 

Four decades on and the film is still a celebrated success in both the public memory as well as the history pages! Kolkata recently played host to the four decade celebrations of this legendary film.

Initiated by Purple Movie Town the Director of Sholay - Ramesh Sippy joined an interactive session with the students of film studies and film-making from the city at the movie town. Students from SRFTI, Jadavpur University and St. Xavier's College, took part in this interactive session and made full use of the opportunity to prick the brains of an ace director who has made films like Shaan, Shakti, Saagar besidesSholay. 

The after-party was held at the Oberoi Grand Hotel where the who's who of Tollywood came together to joinRamesh Sippy and wife Kiran Juneja Sippy for the celebratory get-together.

From the likes of Industrialists like Sundeep Bhutoria to Harsh Neotia; from legends like Soumitra Chatterjee to stars like Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saswata Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee - the celebs made all the right noises.

Our Little Birdie also spotted Rituparna Sengupta, Ananya Chatterjee, Gargi Roy Chowdhury, Arjun and Nilanjana Chakrabarty, Srijit Mukherjee, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Arindam Sil, Mahendra Soni among others at the Oberoi Grand.

Understandably, Pritimoy Chakrabarty, the mind behind the event was all smiles all the while!

Top Debutante Directors of 2013: A Year in Review

A

year in Review for Bengali Cinema is always a positive thing for the industry and 2013 has been no different!

From within a myriad of films like Aborto, Bakita Byaktigoto, Phoring among others, Tollywood looks to have taken the right step forward. But will this be a giant leap for times to come?

We at Tollywood Dhamaka take a look back at 2013 with our ranking of the Top Debutante Directors in the last year.

Whilst we have attempted to rank the best from the rest in our Power Listings, we humbly deny ranking the following two individuals for their debut films but certainly rate them tied-for the penultimate position among the Debutante Directors:

Indranil Roy Choudhury for his very courageous way of taking on a different agenda of sexual awakening in an adolescent boy expressed through beautiful mise-en-scene in his film ‘Phoring’ would be ranked very high on our list. Even though he had directed a short film in ‘Ek Mutho Chhobi’ previously, Phoring is certainly his debut in the full length feature film sector; and what a beautiful film it has been.

Enjoying a tie with Indranil Roy Choudhury would be debutante director Pradipta Bhattacharya, at the penultimate position on our list. His film ‘Bakita Byaktigoto’ was presented by Srijit Mukherjee, and the support went a long way in ensuring the film released theatrically. We salute Pradipta for telling a very unusual story in a very unconventional manner except for some repeat shots that make the film needlessly long. All in all, it’s certainly a good film, and we encourage all to watch the film during its second theatrical release.

However, certainly taking all the accolades and the proverbial cake, for being the Best Debutante Director2013 would be a veteran actor – yes, it is Arindam Sil for ‘Aborto’ – where he weaves in a beautiful story of two brothers on the one hand and some intriguing sub-plots on the other where we are persuaded to question again and again the true definition of success. Also for the very unconventional casting that has led the film to a beautiful story-telling exercise, we salute him. Absolute kudos!

We certainly look forward to their second and successive films in 2014 and the torch of Tollywood surely has passed onto important and able hands in the past year.

Prosenjit and Arpita Chatterjee unveil a new jewellery collection

he veteran star of Tollywood and his better-half recently unveiled a new jewellery collection by one of the City's trusted Jewellery Brand.

Prosenjit Chatterjee and Arpita Chatterjee looked their suave best on this occassion and were also accompanied at the event by Prosenjit's father, and legendary actor - Biswajit.

Arpita Chatterjee was dressed in a red saree with matching gold jewellery from the brand and she looked absolutely stunning in the same. "It is great to be here tonight, and we are humbled by all the love and affection we have received." remarkedthe first-couple of Tollywood,

Our Little Birdie also spotted actor Jisshu Sengupta and director Raja Chanda amongst the audience!

Prosenjit and Jisshu also gave some opportunities to the shuttter-bugs as they urged everyone to watch their upcoming release - Jaatishwar, which hits the theaters on the 17th of January.

Top 5 Directors of Tollywood in 2013: A Year in Review

A

year in Review for Bengali Cinema is always a positive thing for the industry and 2013 has been no different!

From within a myriad of films like Shabdo, Rupkatha Noy, Kanamachi, Proloy,C/o Sir, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Mishawr Rahasya, Chander Pahar - the Directors of Tollywood have made it big, and how!

We at Tollywood Dhamaka take a look back at 2013 with our ranking of the Top 5 Heroines of Tollywood in the last year:

At no.5 would be Srijit Mukherjee for his command over the choice of stories, subjects, locations and characterisations which however, do tend to get a bit confusing in the final product. We also appreciate his efforts to get a film like ‘Bakita Byaktigoto’ to see the light of the day!

At no.4, we have Raj Chakraborty for his sustenance within the mainstream milieu where he has attained the ability to feel the pulse of his mainstream audience

At no.3 would be Atanu Ghosh for his slow-pace in a fast world of cinema, his hand-picked stories that blend romance, intrigue, murder and suspense with smooth fluency. His simplicity impressed us and we hope to see more of his films soon!

At no.2 would be Kaushik Ganguly for his tremendous evolutions from inane films like Brake Fail towards a new awakening through Shobdo and perhaps will take a further leap with the much-awaited: Apur Panchali

And finally, at the no.1 position would undoubtedly be Kamaleshwar Mukherjee for his versatile performance through two feature films each diametrically different from the other and for the courage to bring across stories that are challenging and risky and difficult. We salute the Doctor!
