I
t was a cold January evening in Kolkata when the 5th Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (2014) commenced, with a glorious tribute toMaulana Abul Kalam Azad on his 125th Birth Anniversary.
The fifth edition was inaugurated by Shri M. K. Narayanan, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal, against the majestic facade of the Victoria Memorial. Presented in collaboration with the Maulana Abul kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS) andVictoria Memorial, the occassion was graced by popular Actor and Education Activist Aamir Khan.
The Governor of West Bengal had some fun anecdotes to share as he revealed that he was extremely fortunate to have met Maulana Azad, when he had first joined the Civil Services! He jokingly admitted to having an edge over all other panelists in this matter, including Aamir Khan, who is a descendant of the Maulana's family! He also praised Aamir's role as an activist and his TV show - Satyamev Jayate.
Aamir Khan then delivered the key-note address on "Maulana Azad's secular ideas and foresight" and in a rather insightful speech Aamir revealed how moved he has been by the great man, and plans to make a feature film on the life and works of Maulana Azad so that the future generations awake to the ideals of a true Educationist, Philosopher and Icon from India.
"Maulana, through his writings has come across to me as an extremely progressive and fertile mind" said Aamir, who also shared an interesting story where his uncle, and filmmaker Nasir Hussain, after having faced stiff opposition from the family for wishing to make movies, had gone to Maulana saab for advice and all the great man ever said was - "Just do what your heart says."
Co-incidentally this tag line was recently propagated through Aamir's hit film - "3 idiots"!
"It (the film) has been a life-long dream for me, and I really am very serious about making it soon" revealed Aamir as he thanked the initiators of the Festival for the opportunity of speaking on his ancestor.
The opening ceremony was followed by the book launch of 'MaulanaAzad, Islam and the Indian National Movement" written by Syeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India.
