I
t's raining accolades for Bengali Films at the International Film Festival of India or IFFI as it's fondly called. This year in the Indian Panorama section, 26 Feature Films were shortlisted among which 5 were Bengali films.
Kaushik Ganguly won the Best Director Award of the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) forApur Panchali and the award comprises of Silver Peacock, Certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lacs (USD 24000 approx).
Apur Panchali (Apu’s Song) is a real-life story inspired by Subir Banerjee, the child actor who played the iconic role of Apu in Satyajit Ray’s debut film - Pather Panchali which took almost four years to finish and eventually released theatrically in August 1955. Now, 58 years on, it is extremely ironic that Subir never became a part of any film again in his entire life. On his way to receive an award in a film festival in Germany, he reminisces about his life. The film has been well received by both jury and audiences alike at the festival and will be released theatrically soon.
Meghe Dhaka Tara directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee won the Centenary Award 2013. The award, comprising a Silver Peacock, Certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 10 lacs (USD 16000 approx), was instituted in 2012 for a feature film that “reflects a new paradigm in motion pictures in terms of aesthetics, technique or technological innovation.”
'Beatriz’s war from East Timor' directed by Luigi Acquisto and Bety Reis bagged the Golden Peacock for Best Film and a cash prize of Rs. 40 Lacs (USD 64000 approx).
Alon Moni Aboutboul won the Best Actor (Male) award for his performance in 'A Place in Heaven' while Polish actress Magdalena Boczarska won the Best Actor (Female) award for the film 'In Hiding'.
Onur Unlu won the Special Jury Award for the film 'Thou Gilds’t The Even'.
